The collection of 13 short animated movies from Portugal for Chilhood and Youth has selected by Fernando Galrito, artistic director of the MONSTRA Festival. The DVD collection has been released in 2017 and produced by Assocçião Meridional de Cultura, Rebública Portuguesa.

01. Dodu - The Cardboard Boy

José Miguel Ribeiro, Portugal, 2010, 5’

Dodu is a very sensitive boy. He lives on a hostile city for children and he is forced to spend many hours indoors. Therefore, he makes believe inside an empty cardboard box. Each time Dodu scratches the cardboard's surface, he creates extraordinary worlds inhabited by singular creatures that help him to cope with his emotions and to grow.

 

02. Birdwatching

Nuno Amorim, Portugal, 2014, 12’

A long time ago, Tião, the corn field keeper, lost by his fault, the company of an azure-winged magpie to whom, unwillingly, he had become attached. Since that day when silence filled the fields, Tião searches for that bird’s lost song.

 

03. Home Things - The Knife And The Fork

Short stories featuring by the objects and things you can find at home, accompanied by songs sung by two little girls.

 

04. A Nau Caxineta

Students of the 4th grade under the guidance of Vasco Sá and David Doutel

2012, 4′

Here comes Nau Caxineta that has a lot to say. It has been travelling through the sea for 1 year and 1 day. A film by the 4th grade students of the EB School of Caxinas, Vila do Conde. A free adaptation from the book A Nau Mentireta by Luisa Ducla Soares.

 

05. Kali, The Little Vampire

This is the story about a boy not like the others that dreams about finding his place in the world. As the moon passes through different phases, also Kali should face his inner demons, pass through his fears to, at last, come across his passage to light. One day he will disappear… or maybe it’s just another phase of a cycle.

07. The Eyes Of The Lighthouse

Pedro Serrazina, Portugal, 2010, 15’

In a rocky island exposed to the elements, a lighthouse keeper lives alone with his daughter. From the top of his tower, the father keeps vigil to the horizon line and for the safety of the passing sails. With no other company, the girl develops a unique complicity with the sea, which brings her toys in the shape of debris on the shore. Following the rhythm of the waves, these objects will unveil previous events, memories that the tide cannot erase…

 

08. Ginjas – Red Ribbon

Children's animation series, made up of 26 two minutes episodes, where the plastic and formal resources of drawing and cinema are explored.

 

09. Ema&Gui – Ema Returns Home

Nuno Beato, Portugal, 2010, 7’

Gui – Emma’s imaginary friend, lives in a magic world beyond the clouds. Emma, as a dreamer who won't stop wearing her (seemingly odd, yet) magic boots. Throughout out our episodes Emma has to go and help Gui. During these adventures she discovers how wonderful Gui’s magic world is and becomes fascinated with the idea of moving to Gui’s world. On the other hand, Gui makes Emma see her own world can be as wonderful as the magic world beyond the clouds. They become best friend.

 

10. Loopi Gugo

João Sousa, Portugal, 2016, 6’

A story about two monsters, Loopi and Gugo, and the only thing they have in common: their love for ice cream.

Loopi, a frenetic and very intelligent little blue monster, does everything she can to steal the ice cream from the big and stubborn Gugo.

The robots perform their monotonous work on the conveyor belt day in, day out. But one day, there is an outbreak of creativity. But beware, it is extremely contagious!

 

13. Noal and Curious – Torchdog

“Imagination is more important than knowledge” – Albert Einstein.

The debate over this quote is the core of the relationship between Noal & Curious. They embark on a magical fun filled adventure, sparked by the imagination pf Curious until Noal’s fact based intervention causes comical confrontations of the kind only best friends can have.
